Aviation Professional Organizations process — Details and requirements

Step 1Meet minimum eligibility requirements

  • Be a current and active member of an Aviate-participating aviation organization, and be nominated by that organization – see step 2 for how to become nominated*
    • This entry point is intended for those who are not training or building experience at one of our Aviate university, flight school, part 135 or United Express partners. If you are already eligible for Aviate through another entry point, please review those requirements and apply today.
  • Hold a minimum of a Private Pilot Certificate (PPL)
  • Hold a valid FAA medical certificate that was originally issued as a first- or second-class medical certificate
  • Be in good standing with a participating aviation organization
  • Have a high school diploma or GED equivalent

*Full Aviate eligibility details are provided in the Aviate Program Guide. Any additional requirements set by the participating organization will be found on their website.

Step 2Complete a nominee application for Aviate eligibility

  • Coming soon – Visit your participating aviation organization’s dedicated webpage and complete their application to be nominated for Aviate eligibility
  • Each organization will review all applications and provide nominees to United on a quarterly basis
  • The United Aviate team will review those nominees and invite them to apply to the Aviate program

Step 3Apply to Aviate

Upon being selected by your Aviate-participating aviation organization, you will receive an email from the Aviate team to apply to Aviate within 60 days

If selected to interview, you will go through the full selection process, which includes:

  • A panel interview
  • Personality and cultural fit inventory
  • A technical skill interview

Step 4Fly & gain experience towards ATP or R-ATP minimums

Work towards your ATP or R-ATP hour requirements.

While Aviate has many high-quality partners to gain valuable experience (see below for full list), participants who join Aviate via the Aviation Professional Organization entry point will not be required to train or build experience within the Aviate ecosystem.

You may work as a commercial pilot at any operator, instruct at your local airport or train and build hours in any manner you’d like toward your ATP or R-ATP minimums.*

* You will still be required to meet the transition requirements of Chapter 4 and 5 of the Aviate Program Guide.

Step 5Fly with an Aviate United Express carrier or Part 135 operator

Flying with our Aviate-participating United Express (UAX) carriers or Part 135 operators provides invaluable flying experience.

Secure your path to a United First Officer position by completing 1,200 PIC (Pilot in Command) hours with an Aviate-participating UAX carrier or Part 135 operator

For full details, see Chapter 5 of the APG

Step 6Transition to United as a First Officer

Once minimum transition requirements are complete and are met, you’ll be eligible to transition to United as a First Officer.

You must also meet the following to be eligible for transition:

  • Current passport with at least six-months of validity remaining at time of employment
  • Legal right to work in the United States without sponsorship
  • Must be able to travel freely within the United States and without restriction to all countries United serves
  • Meet all additional First Officer hiring requirements

You will be assigned a First Officer class date and start at United within four (4) months of meeting the PIC hours requirement.
